The instant that he stepped into the shading of the largest sakura tree in Ueno Park, he could feel the illusion weaving about him, thickening the atmosphere with power and security. No one, he was certain, would see him at work. And he preferred it that way. For the most part. Though there was one exception. That exception, though, now was slumped in his arms. The blood was still warm on his hand... the same blood that stained the pure ivory of the young man's coat.
The exception was no more.
"You put up a noble fight, Subaru-kun," Seishirou muttered with amusement. And truly, he did. The battle was something he hadn't thought would be as entertaining as it had been. After everything, it had seemed that Hokuto had been bluffing. But appearances were not always as they seemed. Something had backfired. And somehow, he wondered if Subaru had a hand in that. Nothing was as it seemed. And a certain golden-eyed teenager had reminded him of that amidst a curtain of smoke one rainy day.
It was almost a crime that, even in death, Subaru had such a delicate beauty about him. Like a shattered doll. His eye remained upon his fallen prey - no, it was more than that - even as he set the dead man at the roots of the tree. He hadn't wanted to finish his job as he normally would have with his other targets. Such a prolonged provocation had to be respected. It seemed the older something was, the more value it had. And such a strange notion that time had such weight, such bearing, upon human conscience. Especially since it really didn't matter in the end.
"But I won, after all."
An enigmatic smile perked his lips, his eyes shut, and an involuntary chant escaped him in a smooth, practised slur. And time brought along experience. Perhaps that was why it bore such importance. The sakura branches overhead swayed eagerly, whispering sweet nothings and urgings in a dulcet tone. The sakura ached for its long-time prey. And who was Seishirou to disappoint?
Those seductive sighs in the wind soon faded, though. Something was amiss. The moment, seemingly frozen in time, resumed the passing of time, and Seishirou's eyes opened swiftly. One couldn't offer what wasn't there. His inscrutable stare followed a stray petal floating in the light wind.
It seemed all too convenient that the essence of the thirteenth Sumeragi clan head had vanished.
